Diamond Trading Hub In Mumbai Soon

If any one asks one question, where in India should a gems and jewellery trading hub be set up on the lines of Antwerp and Hong Kong? The answer is simple even if one only has a simple interest in the diamond industry. No other city can match Surat given that diamonds worth Rs 70,000 crore are polished here.Still,the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) is planning to set up a Trading Hub in Mumbai rather than Surat. And this fact has not gone down well to Surat Diamond Industries.

In a recent visit to Surat, GJEPC chairman, Sanjay Kothari said, "We haven't yet finalised any city but Mumbai would be an ideal place to set up a diamond trading hub. The city has well developed infrastructure and with existing business houses. Mumbai is on the top of our priority list. Surat still has to develop infrastructure and facilities only then will it be possible to set up a hub here."

Kothari further informed that an income tax exemption has been sought by them from the Central government, so as to attract foreign diamond trading firms to India.Diamond polishers and Jewellery manufacturers in Surat argue that out of every 12 Diamonds processed in the world, nine are polished in Surat. In fact many Surat diamond companies have to keep an office in Mumbai as their marketing arm which adds to their cost.According to Savji Dholakia of Hare Krishna Exports, "Whether the government helps or not, Surat will become a trading hub on its own. With the existing diamond processing business the city will automatically attract traders from foreign countries."

"Bharat Hira House was started in Mumbai a few decades ago. But it is still not functioning properly because major diamond setups are here in Surat. A Trading Hub can perform its best only where the actual production takes place in the same city," tells a leading diamond Traders.According to KK Sharma, director of India Diamond Institute (IDI) "Being the largest processing centre in world, Surat deserves to be made an international Gem and Jewellery Trading Hub but the city lacks in infrastructure.While Mumbai has good air line connectivity, accommodation and entertainment facilities, Surat fares poorly on this regard, but because of large processing facilities here, the diamond city would be an international trading hub."
